Insecticide Diazinon can still be used, but its days on the market are numbered

The restrictions on the use of Diazinon actually started in 1988 when the EPA canceled registration of Diazinon for use on golf courses and sod farms because birds that congregated in those areas were dying off. In December 2000, the EPA reached an agreement with pesticide manufacturers to completely phase out the use of Diazinon over a period of several years. Retail sales of Diazinon for household use will end this month, however distribution of the chemical for lawn and garden use will not end until the summer of 2003. It will be completely phased out in 2004 when a “product recovery” program will begin.

In the meantime, Diazinon can legally be used for grub control.

Diazinon is one of the most widely used pesticides around homes and gardens. More than 11 million pounds of the insecticide are applied in the United States each year. It is used to kill cockroaches in homes, grubs in lawns, and a number of other insects that attack garden plants. It is highly toxic to both birds and fish, which is one of the reasons its use is being phased out. If you decide not to use the Diazinon in your garage, it can be disposed of at the City of Baltimore’s Home Hazardous Waste drop-off day next spring.

I am not sure if the American holly (Ilex opaca) is the best holly tree for our area, however, I support your planting one because it is native to Maryland and is generally well-adapted to our climate. Be aware that even though it is a native plant, it has a number of disease and insect problems. To help prevent problems, plant American holly trees into moist, loose, well-drained soil. They grow best in full sun or partial shade, but I have seen them growing in the full shade of forested areas. If you want a lot of fruit, choose a sunny location for your trees. I say trees because you will need at least two plants, one male and one female, for flower fertilization and fruit set. There are many cultivars of the original on the market that have more or less unique characteristics. For example, there are several cultivars with yellow fruit and some fruit more heavily than the species plant.
